The book with the essay “Mapping the Way Home” is available from Pembroke Magazine at the University of North Carolina. Andrea wrote this about the piece, “As soon as my mother and I pulled onto the freeway for our four-day road trip, I was wary of her sense of direction and ability to recognize landmarks and roadways. Her confusion and disorientation put me on edge. By the end of the trip, I realized her memory, lodged deeply in her cells, still worked. With grace, dignity, and gratitude, she knew all along how to get to her destination, including the final one shortly thereafter, even if she didn’t remember the details.”
